Bayern Munich’s Lee Hyun-ju has joined FC Arouca in a record transfer deal exceeding €1.6 million. This marks a strategic step in his career as he shifts from a series of loan spells in Germany’s 2. Bundesliga, where he showcased his abilities as an attacking midfielder. Arouca aims to strengthen its squad in the Primeira Liga with this signing, enhancing its international presence, particularly in the Asian market. This move sets the stage for future developments in Lee’s career.

Bayern Munich’s young midfielder, Lee Hyun-ju, has officially transferred to Portuguese club FC Arouca in a revolutionary deal announced in July 2025. This permanent transfer marks the end of Lee’s loan spells in Germany’s 2. Bundesliga. Arouca set a new club record with a transfer fee exceeding €1.6 million, previously paid for Taichi Fukui. At just 22 years old, Lee was under contract with Bayern Munich until 2027 before moving to Arouca.

Bayern Munich’s midfielder Lee Hyun-ju has transferred to FC Arouca, marking a significant milestone with a record transfer fee.

Lee began his career at Tree Mers FC and Pohang Steelers in South Korea before joining Bayern Munich in January 2022. Initially on loan, he became a permanent player in August 2022, with an extended contract until 2027. He spent time primarily with Bayern Munich II while taking multiple loans to 2. Bundesliga clubs, including Wehen Wiesbaden in the 2023-24 season and Hannover 96 in 2024-25.

During his last loan, he appeared 23 times for Hannover, contributing three goals. The multiple loan experiences offered Lee significant playing time, yet did not guarantee permanent placements in Germany’s second tier. His time at Hannover showcased his potential as an attacking midfielder, and his performances caught the attention of the club’s management at Arouca.

The move to Arouca is strategically aligned with his development needs. It represents the club’s ambition to strengthen its squad and compete effectively in the Primeira Liga. Arouca has a history of scouting and securing emerging talent, and Lee’s signing could enhance the club’s profile internationally.

The transfer’s media reception reflects Lee’s significance as a South Korean international player. Arouca’s promotional strategies emphasize engagement with fans and broader markets, particularly in South Korea, where Lee is seen as an ambassador.
