Real Madrid have rejected the opportunity to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka after his representatives approached the Spanish giants about a potential transfer, with the 30-year-old German international entering the final months of his contract at the Allianz Arena and actively seeking a new challenge.
Real Madrid Turn Down Leon Goretzka Approach Despite Previous Interest
According to Defensa Central, Goretzka’s agents have begun sounding out several top European clubs as the midfielder has no intention of renewing his deal with Bayern Munich. Real Madrid were among those contacted but made it clear that the German international is no longer part of their sporting plans, politely informing his representatives there is no interest in reopening discussions.
The decision marks a significant shift in Real Madrid’s stance towards Goretzka, given their previous pursuit of the player on two separate occasions. Florentino Perez had first explored signing Goretzka before he joined Bayern Munich when he was emerging as one of Germany’s most promising talents, then approached him again several years later during the peak of his career in Bavaria when he was a dominant presence under Hansi Flick.
However, circumstances have changed dramatically for the 30-year-old midfielder who is no longer an undisputed starter at Bayern Munich. Real Madrid view Goretzka’s current profile as misaligned with their sporting direction, despite having admired him in the past when he was a key figure for both club and country during his prime years in the Bundesliga.
Real Madrid are aware that Goretzka’s representatives have also approached Barcelona and Atletico Madrid as part of their search for a suitable destination. This opens up the possibility of the German midfielder remaining in Spain and potentially wearing the shirt of one of Madrid’s biggest rivals, though that prospect has not altered the club’s position in the slightest regarding their lack of interest in the transfer.
