Roma have added RB Leipzig midfielder Xaver Schlager to their January transfer shortlist as coach Gian Piero Gasperini pushes for midfield reinforcements. The 28-year-old Austrian international joins Remo Freuler and Morten Frendrup on sporting director Frederic Massara’s list of potential targets for the winter window.
Roma Add RB Leipzig’s Xaver Schlager to January Transfer Shortlist
Gasperini reiterated the importance of strengthening all areas of the pitch during his recent meeting with the Friedkin ownership group, requesting both forward and midfield additions. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Massara is actively following three midfield targets as Roma look to bolster their squad depth in the second half of the season.
Remo Freuler remains the primary target, with Gasperini having worked with the Swiss midfielder for six years during his time at Atalanta. The 32-year-old’s contract with Bologna expires at the end of the current season, potentially making him available on a free transfer or reduced fee in January.
Morten Frendrup represents another option for Roma, with the 24-year-old Danish midfielder having made 19 appearances for Genoa this season. However, La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that prising Frendrup away from former Roma coach Daniele De Rossi will prove difficult, given the strong relationship between player and manager at the Ligurian club.
Schlager emerges as the newest name on Roma’s shortlist, having made 11 appearances and scored two goals in the Bundesliga this season for Leipzig. The Austrian midfielder’s experience and goal threat from midfield appeal to Gasperini’s tactical requirements, though any potential move would require Roma to first offload Niccolò Pisilli to create space in the squad.
