The Argentine defender becomes the 228th different player to rack up a century of appearances for the Reds, but only the third from Argentina to achieve this milestone. Martinez joins former team-mate Alejandro Garnacho, who played 144 times for United before joining Chelsea in the summer, and Marcos Rojo, also a central defender from the South American nation, who represented the Reds on 122 occasions.
Wednesday’s appearance at Turf Moor marked Martinez’s ninth outing across all competitions since he returned from knee surgery in late November. The former Ajax defender has worked his way back to full fitness following the extended rehabilitation period, establishing himself once again as a regular starter for the club.
Martinez thought he had increased his tally of United goals in east Lancashire during the first half against Burnley, only to see his effort ruled out for a foul on Kyle Walker. The centre-back has scored three times for the Reds throughout his United career, with each of those goals coming away from home against Arsenal, Fulham and Liverpool.
The milestone appearance represents a significant achievement for Martinez, who has overcome injury setbacks to establish himself as a key player for Manchester United. His consistency and defensive performances have made him an integral part of the squad since his arrival from Ajax, with the special shirt presentation at Carrington recognising his contribution to the club across his first 100 appearances.
