Tottenham Hotspur are in discussions with Brazilian side Bahia over a permanent transfer for striker Alejo Veliz, with talks ongoing between the clubs despite no fee being agreed at this stage. The move would require the early termination of Veliz’s current loan spell at Rosario Central, which was originally scheduled to run until June 2026.
Tottenham in Advanced Discussions with Bahia Over Permanent Veliz Transfer
The 22-year-old Argentina international returned to his boyhood club Rosario Central last summer after an underwhelming first year in Europe and has shown signs of recovery in familiar surroundings. Veliz has scored five goals in 16 appearances for Rosario since rejoining them, offering enough encouragement to attract external interest from the Brazilian side once again.
Veliz’s time at Tottenham has been severely limited, with all eight of his senior appearances for the club coming during the 2023-24 season. His only goal for Spurs arrived in a 4-2 Premier League defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion in December 2023, when he scored as a late substitute after coming off the bench.
Loan spells away from Tottenham have produced mixed returns for the striker, including an unproductive stint at Sevilla and a more stable period at Espanyol in La Liga, where he scored four times in 16 outings. Bahia’s interest represents a potential fresh start, with the Brazilian side finishing seventh in Serie A last season and qualifying for the Copa Libertadores preliminary rounds.
From Tottenham’s perspective, the move would bring clarity to a situation that has remained unresolved since Veliz’s arrival from Rosario Central in 2023. Spurs paid around £13 million for the striker as a teenager, viewing him as a long-term project with physical and aerial qualities suited to the Premier League, but a lack of consistent opportunities and adaptation issues prevented him from establishing himself under successive managers.
Tottenham are currently 14th in the Premier League and have been reshaping their squad during the winter transfer window, completing the signing of midfielder Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid earlier this week. A Veliz exit would continue that process of focusing on immediate impact players, closing the chapter on a transfer that never fully took off, with whether a final agreement can be reached depending on bridging the gap in valuation over the coming days.
