Tottenham have confirmed the signing of England midfielder Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid for £35 million, with the 25-year-old joining on a deal running until 2031 after Spurs beat Aston Villa to his signature following his departure from Chelsea to the Spanish club in August 2024.
Tottenham Complete £35 Million Signing of England Midfielder Conor Gallagher
Spurs beat Aston Villa to secure Gallagher’s signature, with the former Chelsea player penning a contract that runs until 2031. The midfielder left Stamford Bridge for Atletico Madrid in August 2024 for approximately £33 million, with Portugal forward Joao Felix moving in the opposite direction before subsequently leaving Chelsea.
Gallagher expressed his delight at joining the north London club, stating his excitement about the next phase of his career. “I’m so happy and excited to be here, taking the next step in my career at an amazing club,” said Gallagher. “I know how great the fans are, I’m really happy to be a part of it here and want to create special moments and memories together.”
Tottenham manager Thomas Frank praised the acquisition, describing Gallagher as a top midfielder who will strengthen a key area of the pitch. “Conor is a top midfielder, who we have worked tirelessly to add to our squad,” said Frank. “Conor has captained teams so will bring leadership, maturity, character and personality to our dressing room, while his running power, pressing ability and eye for goal will strengthen us in a key area of the pitch.”
The signing addresses Tottenham’s need for midfield reinforcement following Rodrigo Bentancur’s injury setback. The Uruguay international was ruled out for at least three months after sustaining a hamstring injury requiring surgery during the 3-2 Premier League defeat by Bournemouth last week, leaving Spurs short of options in central midfield.
Gallagher brings significant experience with 22 caps for England, though he has featured only once under current manager Thomas Tuchel, playing 59 minutes in a 3-1 friendly defeat by Senegal. The midfielder made 77 appearances across all competitions for Atletico Madrid, scoring seven goals, and previously accumulated 136 Premier League appearances during spells with Chelsea, West Bromwich Albion and Crystal Palace before his move to La Liga.
