Roma have moved on from Leon Bailey after ending the Jamaican winger’s loan early and sending him back to Aston Villa. With an attacking spot now open, the club have turned their attention to Tottenham’s Mathys Tel, who is said to be keen to leave. Sporting director Ricky Massara has resumed discussions about a loan, though Paris FC are also interested.
Roma End Leon Bailey Loan and Reopen Talks for Tottenham’s Mathys Tel
Leon Bailey is no longer a Roma player after the club decided to terminate the Jamaican winger’s loan early. Bailey has returned to Aston Villa following what was described as a disappointing spell in the Italian capital.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Roma have shifted focus to Mathys Tel as they look to fill the opening in attack created by Bailey’s departure. The report said Roma want a right-footed attacking midfielder, a profile coach Gian Piero Gasperini has been seeking since last summer, prompting sporting director Ricky Massara to revisit the Tottenham player.
Tel’s situation at Spurs has changed during the season. He was left out of the club’s UEFA squad at the start of the campaign, then reinstated after Dominic Solanke sustained an ankle injury. With Solanke now available again, Tottenham coach Thomas Frank has made another switch, bringing Solanke back into the group and leaving Tel out.
That second exclusion has heightened Tel’s dissatisfaction, the report said, partly because of his limited use. Tel has played in 20 of Tottenham’s 31 matches this season, starting eight times and averaging 37.3 minutes per game. Massara has resumed talks with Tel’s entourage, who have again asked for a loan move as the player hopes to secure a place at the World Cup.
A six-month loan was described as a good fit for Roma, particularly with the club dealing with Financial Fair Play regulations at Trigoria. The report added that Paris FC are also interested in Tel, a move that would allow the Frenchman to return to his homeland.
