Manchester United are actively monitoring Brighton’s Carlos Baleba and Atalanta’s Ederson as they prepare for a significant midfield rebuild this summer. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirms both players remain on the club’s shortlist following departures of key midfielders. According to Football365.com.
Romano confirms United’s dual midfield pursuit as Barcelona weigh Rashford future
Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Baleba has been on United’s radar since August 2025, with personal terms already agreed between the player and club. The Brighton midfielder wanted the move to Old Trafford, but United must now decide whether to activate their long-standing interest in the 22-year-old.
United’s midfield recruitment has become urgent following confirmed departures of Manuel Ugarte and Casemiro this summer. Romano explained on his YouTube channel that the club “want to sign at least two midfielders” as they address one of their weakest areas from last season’s campaign.
Atalanta’s Ederson presents a more complex scenario, with the Brazilian already agreeing personal terms with Atletico Madrid for a potential €45m move. However, Atletico consider this fee too expensive for a player whose contract expires in summer 2027, creating an opportunity for other interested clubs.
Romano confirmed that “two Premier League clubs are considering this opportunity” for Ederson, with United’s interest dating back to summer 2025. Atalanta previously blocked his exit but are now prepared to sell for the quoted fee, though United have made no final decision.
Meanwhile, Barcelona want to renegotiate Marcus Rashford’s loan deal rather than trigger his €30m buy option clause. Romano reports that United insist on the original clause being activated or the player will return, creating a standoff between the clubs over the England forward’s future.
