Howe Loses Ground at United as Hoeness Enters Frame

Manchester United are reported to be reconsidering Eddie Howe as their leading option to succeed Michael Carrick, with VfB Stuttgart manager Sebastian Hoeness now under consideration. Carrick’s own position remains precarious despite a 3-2 comeback win over AS Roma, and Saturday’s home match against Aston Villa could prove decisive. According to Footballtoday.com.

Hoeness considered by United as Howe loses ground in Carrick succession plan

According to The Independent, the club hierarchy are “much less sold” on Eddie Howe, the former Newcastle United manager, despite strong links to a post that could soon fall vacant. United are now considering a move for VfB Stuttgart manager Sebastian Hoeness, even though the German club have made a disappointing start to the season.

Carrick looked certain to lose his job when United trailed 2-0 at half-time against AS Roma at Old Trafford in Tuesday’s Champions League match. A Bruno Fernandes penalty and a Matheus Cunha brace then produced a 3-2 comeback win, yet United are still planning to remove him.

The coming international break could be an ideal window for a change. His fate could be sealed if United lose to Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Saturday evening, with Unai Emery’s side the opponents. Carrick will hope the Roma result was the spark his players needed to turn their season around.

→Mac Allister Price Tag Complicates Real Madrid Pursuit

This is not the first time his position has come under scrutiny. He was expected to lose his job after a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth, but senior club officials gave him more time after a serious discussion about his future. He then lost 2-0 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, and United haven’t won back-to-back games this season.

Caution appears to be shaping the process. United don’t want knee-jerk decisions, particularly after giving Ruben Amorim a substantial compensation package when sacking him last term, and reports claim they want to secure a replacement first. Antonio Conte and Julian Nagelsmann have also been linked, while Howe has reportedly been removed from the shortlist.
