Atletico Madrid are reportedly lining up a summer approach for Manchester United full-back Diogo Dalot and believe they can lure him to Spain. Dalot has remained a regular starter despite managerial upheaval at Old Trafford, but has faced criticism this season and could be sold depending on the next permanent coach. Gary Neville has urged United to keep the 26-year-old.

Atletico Madrid eye Man United full-back Dalot and plan formal summer bid

Atletico Madrid hope to sign Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot in the summer transfer window, according to reports in Spain. The Portugal international has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford after a season in which he has come in for criticism, even though he has largely been a starter. The report says Atletico are confident they can strike a deal once the window opens.

The situation comes amid wider uncertainty at United following the sacking of Ruben Amorim earlier this month. United appointed Michael Carrick as interim head coach until the end of the season, with Carrick winning his first two matches in charge against Manchester City and Arsenal. Dalot started under Amorim and has also started both of Carrick’s opening two games as interim boss.

Spanish website Fichajes reported that Atletico are looking to strengthen their defensive structure after Nahuel Molina’s recent inconsistent performances. The report added that Diego Simeone values Dalot’s potential addition, and that Atletico need a reliable option who can free up Marcos Llorente to play a more central role in midfield. It also claimed Dalot would welcome a move to the Spanish capital.

Fichajes said Atletico are prepared to make a significant financial effort and will submit a formal offer as soon as the summer window opens in an attempt to convince United to sell. Dalot joined United from Porto for around £19 million in 2019, according to the report.

Former United captain Gary Neville recently warned the club against selling Dalot, saying he receives a harsh assessment from some supporters and can produce consistent performances. Speaking on his Sky Sports podcast, Neville said Dalot is athletic, good in the air, decent on the ball and capable of defending the back post, adding that he would not rush to move him on if he played right fullback regularly.
