Alexander Isak has scored six league goals and supplied more than half of Liverpool’s total, with only Erling Haaland ahead of him in the Premier League this season. His finish in the 2-0 win over Brighton extended a fourth consecutive victory under Andoni Iraola, with Arsenal next. According to Anfieldindex.com.
Isak carries Liverpool’s goal load as Iraola’s side take shape
Liverpool committed a British record £125m to sign Isak from Newcastle United in August 2025, and the early returns were modest. A slow start was followed by a broken leg in December, leaving him with four goals in 22 appearances. Inside Liverpool, the view appears to have been that this was a long-term investment in an elite forward.
As reported by BBC Football, he has taken his league tally to six, and only Erling Haaland has scored more in the Premier League this season. He has also supplied more than half of Liverpool’s league goals, a concentration of scoring that carries risk across a long season but underlines his importance to Iraola’s team.
The win over Brighton was built on defensive discipline rather than possession. Liverpool had only 35.6% of the ball, yet Brighton, who arrived in excellent attacking form, were kept at bay. Ronald Araujo’s influence stood out, and Liverpool have now recorded four shutouts in eight league games.
The goals showed both sides of Iraola’s approach. Florian Wirtz’s effort took a deflection off Pascal Gross for the opener, a goal that owed something to luck but came while Liverpool were causing problems through energy and directness. For the second, Bradley Barcola won the duel and accelerated the attack before Isak applied the finish.
Beyond Isak, the attack is gaining depth. Barcola offers urgency out wide, Wirtz influences play between the lines and Cody Gakpo stretches defences. Service matters for a striker whose movement is most damaging when deliveries arrive early, a theme Iraola has addressed. Wirtz came off with an ankle issue, however, with matches arriving every three days.
Arsenal are next in the league, and Liverpool have moved up to fourth. If Isak stays fit and Barcola and Wirtz keep sharpening the attack, the debate could shift from whether he justifies £125m to whether he can lift Iraola’s side towards the top of the Premier League table.
