The 28-year-old defender has been impressed by how Carrick’s playing experience translates into his coaching methods. Speaking to United Review ahead of the Crystal Palace fixture, Mazraoui noted how the head coach’s 464 appearances as a player provide invaluable insight into the club’s culture and expectations.
“He has a big history at the club,” Mazraoui explained. “He knows the club really, really well. You see and you feel that in this type of coaching and the words he’s saying to us in his meetings.” The full-back believes this deep connection manifests clearly in team meetings and training sessions.
Mazraoui credits Carrick’s trophy-winning experience for helping navigate the team through various challenges. “He won big prizes, so he knows how it is in the good times, in the bad times, and you just see and feel that,” the defender stated, suggesting recent performances reflect this understanding rather than luck.
The coaching staff’s clarity has particularly impressed Mazraoui, especially working with Jonathan Woodgate for the first time. “He’s really positive. He’s really, really clear. The whole staff is like on [a] line. They know what they want and they’re telling us what they want,” he revealed about the defensive coach’s approach.
Mazraoui found the transition with Jonny Evans amusing, having been team-mates with the defender on nine occasions last season before Evans joined the coaching setup. “Especially when I arrived, I knew him as my team-mate, and I have quite a good relationship with Jonny,” he noted, adding that the respect level remained unchanged.
