Michael Carrick confirmed that Sesko’s early exit was the result of exacerbating an existing injury rather than a completely new problem. “He got a bang on his shin when he fell down the side of the pitch,” Carrick explained to MUTV. “It’s something that he’s been carrying for a little bit as well, so we’ve had to manage him a bit.”
The Slovenia international had delivered an impressive first-half performance, scoring his 11th league goal and 12th in all competitions before the incident occurred. Sesko was clearly hurt when being shoved off the pitch by Konate whilst trying to protect the ball towards the corner flag, leading to a nasty fall into the advertising hoardings.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Carrick provided additional context about the injury’s nature. “He’s been carrying a bit of a shin problem for some time and it was when we got pushed into the hoarding and down the dip. So that was it,” the United head coach revealed, emphasising how the collision directly impacted the problematic area.
The centre-forward’s absence was clearly felt in the second half, with his ability to hold the ball up in attack notably missed. However, Kobbie Mainoo stepped up to secure victory with a superb 77th-minute winner on what proved to be another great afternoon for United at Old Trafford.
United face Sunderland away on Saturday in their penultimate away fixture of the campaign, with Sesko hoping to recover in time. The striker netted in the corresponding game against the Black Cats and will be eager to be available for the trip to the north east.
