Liverpool manager Arne Slot has admitted his side are failing to maximise Alexander Isak’s strengths and must create more threatening situations for their £125 million striker, comparing the challenge to how Manchester City effectively utilise Erling Haaland in their system.
Slot Concedes Liverpool Must Better Utilise £125M Striker Alexander Isak
The Swedish international scored his first Premier League goal for Liverpool during last Sunday’s victory over West Ham but struggled to make an impact in Wednesday’s draw with Sunderland.
Slot acknowledged that whilst Isak’s slow start partly stems from missing pre-season after forcing his Newcastle exit, Liverpool’s tactical approach has also contributed to the striker’s underwhelming performances since his summer arrival.
Isak has averaged just 14 touches per game across his last three starts, a significant reduction from his 36.8 touches per match at Newcastle last season.
The 25-year-old’s limited involvement has raised questions about Liverpool’s ability to integrate their record signing into their attacking system, particularly given his prolific form during his final campaign at St James’ Park.
Slot defended the low touch statistics by referencing Haaland’s success at Manchester City, emphasising that quality of involvement matters more than quantity.
The Dutch manager acknowledged Liverpool have become more compact defensively in recent matches, conceding only one goal in their last two fixtures, but admitted this tactical shift has reduced creative opportunities for their front line.
The Liverpool boss confirmed defender Conor Bradley has recovered from injury and will be available for Saturday’s trip to Leeds United in the FA Cup.
Slot stressed that improving service to Isak remains a priority as Liverpool look to justify their substantial investment in the former Real Sociedad striker.
Speaking ahead of the Leeds fixture, Slot reiterated his commitment to finding the optimal tactical solution to unlock Isak’s potential.
The manager emphasised that creating more threatening situations for his striker represents a key area for improvement as Liverpool continue their pursuit of silverware across multiple competitions this season.
