Real Madrid face a new fitness concern as Ferland Mendy missed training on Friday due to calf discomfort, casting doubt over the left-back’s availability for Saturday’s Spanish Super Cup final against Barcelona in Jeddah after struggling with injuries throughout the season.
Ferland Mendy Misses Real Madrid Training With Calf Problem Before Barcelona Final
The 30-year-old left-back did not train with the rest of the squad on Friday as he deals with discomfort in one of his calves, according to journalist Miguel Angel Diaz. It remains unclear whether Mendy will be available to face Barcelona in the Super Cup final, with the defender’s participation now in serious doubt following this latest fitness setback.
Mendy has endured a torrid season with injuries, having missed the opening months after sustaining a problem in April 2025. The French international only returned to action in October before making his first appearance of the campaign against Olympiacos in the Champions League during November, but was immediately sidelined again with a fresh muscle issue.
The latest injury concern led to Mendy missing five matches throughout December before he made a brief comeback with a short cameo appearance against Real Betis in the new year. He also featured for 20 minutes during Real Madrid’s Spanish Super Cup semi-final victory over Atletico Madrid earlier this week, suggesting he was building match fitness.
However, the calf discomfort has now prevented Mendy from participating in Friday’s training session on the eve of the final against Barcelona. As things stand, he appears unlikely to play any part in Saturday’s showpiece match, adding to Real Madrid’s defensive concerns despite the recent return of Kylian Mbappe, Raul Asencio and Rodrygo Goes from their respective fitness issues.
