The £17.5m acquisition represents a major statement of intent from Sunderland, with sporting director Kristjaan Speakman highlighting Angulo’s versatility in the final third. Speakman praised the winger as “an incredibly exciting prospect” who “excels in all the core actions required to impact the final third” and arrives with clear ambition to make an immediate impression.
Angulo’s departure from Belgium comes despite signing a contract extension with Anderlecht just months earlier in September 2025, having originally joined the Belgian club in 2022. His three and a half years in Belgium concluded with an impressive 15 goal contributions across 30 games this season, demonstrating the consistent productivity that attracted Sunderland’s interest.
The Ecuador international brings valuable experience across multiple levels, having made his senior international debut in October 2021 during a friendly against Mexico. Speakman emphasised that despite his young age, Angulo has already accumulated “many interesting experiences as a senior player domestically, on the European stage, and internationally with Ecuador”, suggesting he possesses the maturity to adapt quickly to English football.
Sunderland have also confirmed the departure of winger Simon Adingra, who has joined AS Monaco on loan with a view to a permanent move. The simultaneous arrival of Angulo and departure of Adingra indicates a clear reshaping of the club’s wide attacking options during the current transfer window.
