Conor Coady has retired from playing at the age of 33, ending a 503-game club career defined by his years as Wolves captain. The former England defender, who won 10 caps, has been without a club since leaving Wrexham in September and has been linked with a coaching role. According to Bbc.com.

Coady’s retirement closes a career rebuilt by a move into defence

Wolves provided the core of his career. Kenny Jackett signed Coady in 2015, and he played a major part in the club’s promotion back to the Premier League in 2018. He went on to make 317 appearances, scoring seven of his career tally of 22 goals for club and country, before leaving on loan for Everton in 2022.

The captaincy brought the high points. Coady led a Wolves side that twice finished seventh and also reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League. Most of his success at the club followed a switch to central defence under then manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

His route there was far from direct. Coady began in the Liverpool academy as a midfielder, where some compared him with Steven Gerrard, before a loan move to Sheffield United in 2013. He signed for Huddersfield Town at the end of that season.

The later years were more turbulent. Leicester City signed him in July 2023 for a reported £8.5m, after Everton opted not to complete a £4.5m deal to make his season-long loan permanent. His spell at Wrexham was short and ended prematurely, and he also joined Nathan Jones’ Charlton, including a loan there last season.

Coady, who works as a pundit for BBC Radio 5 Live, has already been linked with the role of assistant head coach at League One side Barnsley. That link follows his retirement and a period without a club that began when he left Wrexham in September.
