The 50-year-old Norwegian became available after leaving his position as head coach of Ligue 2 side Saint-Etienne last weekend. His sudden availability has coincided perfectly with Aberdeen’s ongoing search for a new manager following their dismissal of Jimmy Thelin at the start of last month.

Horneland’s most impressive managerial spell came during his three successful years with SK Brann in Norway’s top division. He guided the club to promotion before securing a second-place finish in the country’s premier competition, while also delivering the Norwegian Cup trophy during his tenure with the Bergen-based side.

The experienced coach spent 14 months managing in France with Saint-Etienne before his recent departure from the club. His international experience, combined with his domestic success in Norway, has enhanced his credentials as Aberdeen enter the latter stages of their managerial recruitment process.

Horneland’s coaching portfolio includes spells with some of Norway’s most prominent clubs, having managed both Rosenborg and his hometown team Haugesund. Rosenborg are regarded as Norway’s biggest club, adding significant weight to his managerial experience and demonstrating his ability to handle pressure at high-profile institutions.
