Ruben Amorim sensationally claimed he joined Manchester United to be their manager rather than head coach following Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Leeds, suggesting he will leave when his contract expires in June 2027 and hinting at ongoing friction with the club hierarchy over transfers and tactical decisions.

Amorim Declares He Is Manchester United Manager Not Head Coach After Leeds Draw

The Portuguese coach was unveiled as head coach when appointed at Old Trafford in November 2024 on a two-and-a-half-year contract, but delivered an explosive press conference message to the hierarchy at Elland Road. Amorim told reporters he came to be “the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach of Manchester United” when questioned about whether he still has backing from the club’s board following recent hints at behind-the-scenes disagreements.

Amorim referenced high-profile managers to emphasise his point, stating his name may not be Thomas Tuchel, Antonio Conte or Jose Mourinho, but he remains Manchester United’s manager for the duration of his deal. The former Sporting boss declared he will fulfill his role “for 18 months or when the board decides to change” and insisted he will not quit his position, saying he will “do my job until another guy is coming here to replace me.”

The comments follow Amorim’s Christmas Eve suggestion that he has not received anticipated backing in the transfer market to implement his preferred 3-4-3 tactical system. He stated he was “starting to understand that is not going to happen” regarding significant spending and time needed for his formation, leading him to consider adapting his approach. Amorim subsequently fielded a back four for the first time against Newcastle on Boxing Day before reverting to three centre-backs against Wolves.

Amorim emphasised that every department including scouting and sporting director “needs to do their job” while he fulfills his managerial duties for the remaining 18 months of his contract. He suggested the club needs to change if it cannot handle criticism from pundits like Gary Neville, reinforcing his determination to operate as manager rather than simply coach. The draw with Leeds extended Manchester United’s poor run to one win in five games, with the team next facing Burnley on Wednesday in a match broadcast live on Sky Sports.
