Atlético Madrid are reportedly stepping up their interest in Bruno Fernandes, leaving Manchester United with a potentially major decision in January. The captain’s position has shifted since he publicly questioned Michael Carrick’s tactical approach after the defeat to Como, and Atlético had not submitted a formal offer. Atlético’s January interest tests United’s handling of Fernandes tension
The change in Fernandes‘ standing has been sharp. After publicly questioning Michael Carrick’s tactical approach following the 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como, the 32-year-old was left on the bench for United’s 3-0 loss to Bournemouth. That has prompted fresh speculation that his seven-year spell in Manchester could be nearing its end.
Reports in Spain say Atlético sporting director Mateu Alemany is exploring the possibility of a January move for Fernandes. Diego Simeone is believed to admire the Portugal international’s creativity and leadership, and the club have been monitoring him for some time. Atlético had not submitted a formal offer, but United’s deteriorating situation has made the prospect more appealing.
The interest is not new. A recent Caught Offside report placed Atlético among several major European clubs tracking Fernandes, with AC Milan and Juventus also named. United were still keen to extend his contract at that stage, though the landscape has since changed, with the latest reports suggesting Atlético’s interest has intensified.
The case against a mid-season sale rests on output, with Fernandes still United’s most productive creator despite the current tension. Since Carrick first took charge in January, he has registered 14 assists and created 96 chances, more than any other player across Europe’s top five leagues during that period.
Stylistically, Atlético would suit him, with Simeone valuing intensity and match-deciding players, while Fernandes could supply the creativity lost with Antoine Griezmann’s departure. Patience may be wiser, though: if a new manager replaces Carrick, his relationship with the club could quickly improve, and triggering the contract extension looks preferable unless Atlético make an exceptional offer.
