Tottenham Hotspur are awaiting a final diagnosis on Lucas Bergvall’s ankle injury amid early concerns the teenager could be sidelined for up to three months. The Sweden international was forced off during Tuesday night’s 2-0 Champions League win over Borussia Dortmund after attempting to play on. Head coach Thomas Frank did not provide a timescale ahead of Saturday’s Premier League trip to Burnley.

Spurs await Bergvall diagnosis amid fears of three-month ankle lay-off

Tottenham said they are still assessing Lucas Bergvall’s ankle injury as they wait for a final diagnosis, with early concerns the midfielder could miss up to three months. The 19-year-old Sweden international sustained the problem in Tuesday night’s 2-0 Champions League victory over Borussia Dortmund and was substituted in the second half after trying to continue.

Bergvall is now set to be unavailable for a significant period, a development described as a blow for head coach Thomas Frank. Spurs have yet to communicate how severe the injury is, with the club’s medical staff continuing their evaluation. Frank did not offer a timescale when he spoke at his news conference before Saturday’s Premier League match at Burnley.

An absence of three months is said to be the worst-case scenario for Bergvall based on initial tests. The midfielder joined Tottenham in February 2024 and has made 26 appearances for the north London club this season. Bergvall has also won six caps for Sweden.

Bergvall’s injury adds to a lengthy list of absentees for Frank, with James Maddison, Rodrigo Bentancur, Mohammed Kudus, Dejan Kulusevski and Ben Davies all out long-term. Richarlison is set to return from a thigh injury in six weeks, while Palhinha is also sidelined with a knock. Tottenham sit 14th in the Premier League after a disappointing first half of the season under Frank.
