Real Madrid forward Brahim Diaz has emerged as Morocco’s national icon ahead of Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations final, with the 26-year-old Malaga-born player serving as the tournament’s top scorer after switching international allegiance from Spain in 2023 following just one senior appearance for his birth country.

Malaga-Born Brahim Diaz Leads Morocco’s Quest for Second AFCON Title as Tournament Top Scorer

The Real Madrid forward grew up understanding dual identity through his mixed heritage, with his mother Patricia from Malaga and father Sufiel born in Spanish city Melilla to a Moroccan family. Diaz regularly visited his grandmother in Nador as a child, where he embraced Moroccan culture and traditions. He has consistently stated that he feels “100% Spanish and 100% Moroccan” throughout his career development.

Diaz’s football education began with futsal at age four or five, developing the close control and explosive acceleration that characterises his current playing style. His father chose patience over early opportunities, allowing Brahim to develop with modest Malaga teams like Tiro Pichon and Mortadelo before joining Malaga’s academy. Manchester City signed him in 2015 as part of their long-term project, with his entire family relocating to Manchester to support his development.

Real Madrid secured Diaz’s signature in 2019 for £21 million, a record fee for a City academy product at the time. However, injuries disrupted his early Madrid period, leading to a successful three-season loan at AC Milan where he wore the number 10 shirt and played a decisive role in their Serie A title triumph. His performances in Milan, including important goals on big European nights, demonstrated leadership beyond his years.

Since returning to Madrid, Diaz accepts limited playing time as part of the process at the club where “winning is the minimum requirement.” His distinctive goal celebration, lifting his elbows and hands in a gesture of personal overcoming, originated from childhood victories in matches and board games. The celebration has become a message of perseverance throughout his professional career.

Morocco’s interest in Diaz dated back years before the 2018 World Cup, with their federation showing constant affection and explaining the country’s customs and vision. After making his Morocco debut in 2024, he has scored 13 goals in 21 games, including strikes in every round up to the semi-finals at this AFCON. His social media posts now generate more reactions than established stars like Achraf Hakimi and Mohamed Salah, while his image appears on billboards and petrol stations across Morocco as the face of the country’s 5G introduction.
