Manchester United’s trophy hunt ended in the second week of January after Brighton secured a 2-1 FA Cup third-round victory at Old Trafford. Goals from Brajan Gruda and Danny Welbeck condemned United to elimination from both domestic cup competitions at the first opportunity for the first time since 1981-82, despite Benjamin Sesko’s late consolation goal.
Brighton Knock Manchester United Out of FA Cup as Welbeck Haunts Former Club
Brighton took advantage of United’s defensive frailties to secure a comfortable victory that leaves the hosts facing their lowest number of games in a complete campaign since 1914-15. Gruda opened the scoring in the first half after Georginio Rutter’s initial header from Danny Welbeck’s cross was cleared off the line by Lisandro Martinez, with the German midfielder blazing home the rebound.
The visitors doubled their advantage in the second half when former United striker Welbeck skipped across the penalty area and planted his shot past Senne Lammens. United’s defence proved amateurish once again, allowing the Brighton captain too much space to find the bottom corner with a well-struck effort that gave the goalkeeper no chance of making a save.
Sesko pulled one back with an 85th-minute header to give United hope of forcing a replay, but Brighton held firm despite Old Trafford roaring the home side forward. The defeat was compounded by Shea Lacey receiving a second yellow card for dissent during five minutes of added time, with the 18-year-old substitute walking off in tears after referee Simon Hooper dismissed him.
Interim manager Darren Fletcher remains winless in his two matches in charge following Wednesday’s draw at Burnley, with the club expected to announce his replacement within 72 hours. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick have been interviewed for the interim role after Ruben Amorim’s sacking last week left United searching for their second temporary manager of the season.
United now sit seventh in the Premier League on 32 points, three behind Liverpool in fourth place, with only Champions League qualification remaining as a realistic target. Fletcher was booked at the final whistle for complaining to the referee about Lacey’s red card, providing another emblem of a horrendous day that leaves United’s season in tatters with their trophy ambitions extinguished before the end of January.
