Carrick Enjoys Perfect Start as United Beat City 2-0 in Manchester Derby
United dominated the match despite having three goals ruled out for marginal offside decisions, with the victory representing the club’s first three points of 2026 and avenging the 3-0 defeat suffered at the Etihad Stadium in September’s reverse fixture. The former United midfielder made five changes from the team that faced Brighton in the Emirates FA Cup, bringing back Amad and Mbeumo after their return from the Africa Cup of Nations this week, while Harry Maguire made his first start since 8 November following recovery from a hamstring injury.
The opening period saw United create numerous chances with Maguire hitting the crossbar from close range in the third minute from a Bruno Fernandes corner. United had two goals disallowed for tight offside calls, with Amad ruled marginally offside after rounding City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, before Fernandes was adjudged ahead of Nathan Ake by a toe’s width when played through by Lisandro Martinez. City’s best opportunity fell to Bernardo Silva, whose header from 10 yards was directed into the Stretford End.
United broke the deadlock in the 65th minute when Mbeumo started a counter-attack after Maguire headed away a City free-kick, exchanging passes with Fernandes before slotting calmly into the bottom corner for his eighth goal of the campaign. The lead was doubled in the 76th minute as substitute Matheus Cunha delivered an inch-perfect cross for Dorgu to get in front of Rico Lewis and cushion the ball into the City net for his second goal for the club.
The victory was secured despite another disallowed goal when Mason Mount’s finish was ruled out following a lengthy VAR review, with Cunha adjudged fractionally offside in the build-up. United defended superbly to secure their third clean sheet of the campaign, with Senne Lammens making crucial saves including a superb stop to claw away Max Alleyne’s header from a corner. The match was played in front of 74,004 spectators and marked the first anniversary of Denis Law’s passing.
Carrick’s tactical changes proved decisive as United controlled the tempo throughout, with the former midfielder receiving vocal support from the crowd as his name rang around the stadium following Mbeumo’s opener. The comprehensive performance saw United create chances consistently while limiting City to few clear opportunities, with Martinez making a crucial intervention to block Erling Haaland’s shot on the turn in the second half.
