Inter Milan coach Cristian Chivu confirmed that Manchester City loanee Manuel Akanji will be deployed in a new midfield role during difficult periods after the Nerazzurri secured a 1-0 victory away to Udinese on Friday evening.
Chivu Reveals Akanji’s Tactical Switch After Inter Milan’s 1-0 Victory Over Udinese
Speaking to DAZN after the match, Chivu explained that Akanji’s flexibility to drop into midfield has become crucial when Inter face pressure from opponents. The Swiss defender’s ability to provide physicality in front of the penalty area represents an extra tactical solution for the Nerazzurri during challenging moments in matches.
Chivu praised his team’s improved defensive solidity in recent fixtures against Parma, Lecce and Udinese, highlighting the collective responsibility shown across all areas of the pitch. The Inter coach emphasised that defensive work begins with high pressing and extends through the mid-block before ending with a very low defensive line, demonstrating the squad’s growing maturity and tactical discipline.
The 49-year-old manager also discussed the partnership between Lautaro Martinez and Pio Esposito, stating that the young forward provides more verticality to Inter’s attacking play. Chivu confirmed he has four forwards who complement each other effectively and put everything at the disposal of the group, with all players living the daily routine through work and serenity.
Addressing suggestions that Inter had underestimated Udinese ahead of their Champions League clash with Arsenal, Chivu rejected any notion of complacency. The former Inter defender insisted he does not have the luxury of underestimating any opponent and confirmed that tactical decisions were based solely on Udinese’s strengths without considering other fixtures or making calculations.
Chivu acknowledged that Inter struggled more after Pio Esposito left the pitch but praised the contribution of substitute Bonny and the collective effort required to protect their narrow lead. The coach concluded by stating that defending the clean sheet was not easy but the team managed it through everyone putting everything they had onto the pitch.
