Roberto De Zerbi’s promising Marseille project has collapsed dramatically, with the Italian coach departing by mutual agreement following a humiliating 5-0 defeat to bitter rivals Paris Saint-Germain that left observers questioning his tactical decisions. According to Theguardian.com.
De Zerbi’s Marseille tenure crumbles after PSG hammering and European exit
The comprehensive defeat at the Parc des Princes on Sunday restored PSG’s two-point lead over Lens after 21 rounds, leaving Marseille languishing in fourth position. De Zerbi had apologised to supporters following the loss against their most despised rivals, acknowledging the scale of the disappointment.
Marseille’s struggles extended beyond domestic competition, with a damaging 3-0 defeat at Club Brugge two weeks earlier sealing their Champions League exit. The Belgian reverse compounded growing concerns about De Zerbi’s recent tactical choices, which had left many observers puzzled despite his earlier success.
The club confirmed the separation followed extensive discussions involving owner, president, director of football and head coach. Marseille stated the decision was taken “after thorough consideration, in the best interests of the club and in order to address the sporting challenges of the end of the season.”
De Zerbi had guided Marseille to second place last season after joining in 2024 following his Brighton departure. However, his recent tactical adjustments failed to maintain the progress achieved during his initial campaign, culminating in the dramatic collapse against PSG.
The club faces Saturday’s Ligue 1 fixture against Strasbourg without announcing De Zerbi’s replacement. Since Frank McCourt’s 2016 takeover, Marseille have endured persistent instability with successive coaching changes, unable to recapture their dominance from the late 1980s and early 1990s when they claimed France’s only Champions League triumph before PSG’s recent success.
