Everton have left Jack Grealish out of their squad for the Carabao Cup fourth-round tie with Newcastle, citing a breach of club discipline. The England player is understood to have missed training on Monday without permission, and he is expected to be fined. Jarrad Branthwaite is also unavailable. According to Theguardian.com.

Everton publicly cite discipline as Grealish is left out against Newcastle

Everton chose to state the reason for the omission publicly rather than leave it to speculation. After naming David Moyes’s side for the tie at Hill Dickinson Stadium, the club posted on X that “Jack Grealish is unavailable for selection due to a breach of club discipline”. Branthwaite, it added, misses a second successive game because of concussion protocols.

The 31-year-old is understood to have missed training on Monday without permission. He did return to Everton’s Finch Farm complex after that absence, but he is expected to be fined for being away without authorisation. The episode therefore carries a financial penalty as well as a place on the sidelines for the Newcastle game.

The timing adds to the disruption. Grealish had already missed Everton’s defeat at Arsenal on Saturday because of illness, so he has now been absent from two successive matchday squads. Before that he had started four successive games for Moyes’s side, having rejoined the club this summer on a season’s loan from Manchester City.

The deal carries a considerable price. Everton paid £12m in total for Grealish’s loan last season and are paying a similar sum for this campaign. He will become a free agent at the end of the season, when his contract with City expires.
