Viktor Gyokeres’ market value has dipped only months into his Arsenal career after a difficult start following his summer move from Sporting CP. Transfermarkt has lowered his valuation, even as clauses in the deal have already been triggered to send additional payments to Sporting. Manager Mikel Arteta has pointed to a disrupted pre-season and injury, while Emmanuel Eboue urged Arsenal to use their striker more.
Viktor Gyokeres’ market value drops as Arsenal add-ons kick in
Viktor Gyokeres’ transfer value has fallen since his move to Arsenal, with Transfermarkt listing the forward at £60.8 million after previously valuing him at £65.2 million. The Sweden international joined the Gunners in the summer and has faced scrutiny over his early form in north London, with his impact in matches questioned despite arriving with a strong scoring reputation.
Arsenal signed Gyokeres from Sporting CP for an initial £55 million (€63.5m), plus around £8.6m (€10m) in add-ons. The club has already moved toward those additional payments, with Sporting scheduled to receive a further £1.08m (€1.25m) after a clause was triggered. Under the agreement, Arsenal must pay Sporting every time Gyokeres makes 20 appearances in which he plays 45 minutes or more.
That add-on figure is capped at about £4.3m, but Gyokeres’ on-pitch return has been mixed. He has scored nine goals in 28 appearances, with five of those goals coming in the Premier League. The 27-year-old, who averaged a goal a game in Portugal, has been criticised for limited involvement in Arsenal’s attacking play, including spells with few touches, while team-mates have not always found him in the right areas.
Arteta said last month the attention on Gyokeres has been “normal” since Arsenal signed a recognised No. 9. The Arsenal manager cited a disrupted pre-season after Gyokeres attempted to force an exit from Sporting and said the striker was not in his best physical state in his first weeks. Arteta added Gyokeres then had “a very good period” before being injured, and said he has seen “a lot of positive things” in the last two games since his return.
Gyokeres remains Arsenal’s top Premier League scorer, joint with Leandro Trossard, with Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Mikel Merino and Eberci Eze all within a goal. Former Arsenal player Emmanuel Eboue, speaking to Aceodds.com, said Gyokeres is “a very good striker” but argued the issue is that the wingers do not use him often enough, adding that the striker’s job is to score while others should focus on producing chances.
