Liverpool’s contract negotiations with Dominik Szoboszlai have taken on added urgency amid suggestions the midfielder could be considering a move to Real Madrid, according to industry experts. According to Football365.com.
Szoboszlai’s versatility masks potential Madrid ambitions as Liverpool seek new deal
Former Premier League chief executive Keith Wyness believes Szoboszlai could be “eyeing a move” to Spain following his exceptional form this campaign. The Hungary international has registered 10 goals and seven assists in 36 appearances across all competitions during what has been a challenging season for Liverpool.
Szoboszlai’s remarkable versatility has seen him deployed in multiple positions throughout the campaign, including eight starts at right-back alongside appearances on the right wing and in defensive midfield. His natural attacking midfielder role has been supplemented by this tactical flexibility, demonstrating his value to Arne Slot’s squad during a disappointing title defense.
Liverpool are eager to extend the 25-year-old’s contract beyond its current 2028 expiration date, with the midfielder currently earning around £120,000 per week at Anfield. However, his increased importance to the team structure suggests any new deal would require a significant wage increase to reflect his enhanced status.
The contract situation could become problematic if Szoboszlai enters the final two years of his current agreement, particularly with Real Madrid’s historical interest in free agents and cut-price signings. Hungary manager Marco Rossi has previously stated that Szoboszlai’s dream is to play for Madrid, adding another layer of complexity to Liverpool’s retention efforts.
TEAMtalk reported earlier this week that Liverpool remain confident of securing Szoboszlai’s signature on a new long-term deal, with talks showing “signs of progress” and all parties aligned in continuing their project together before next season begins.
