Eddie Howe has moved to reassure Newcastle supporters about Sandro Tonali’s commitment following speculation linking the midfielder with Arsenal. The manager confirmed he spoke directly with the Italian international on Monday, emphasising the player’s focus on upcoming fixtures rather than transfer speculation. According to Bbc.com.

Howe Confident in Tonali Commitment Despite Agent’s Arsenal Speculation

Arsenal’s reported interest in Tonali emerged on deadline day, though Newcastle quickly dismissed any possibility of a sale and confirmed no contact had been made. However, the midfielder’s agent Giuseppe Riso suggested in a Sky Italia interview that valuation discussions could occur “in March or April if Newcastle are open to it”, despite denying direct conversations with Arsenal.

Howe’s Monday discussion with Tonali revealed a player entirely focused on Newcastle’s immediate objectives, particularly Wednesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Manchester City. “His only focus was on Manchester City and trying to win that game so there’s absolutely no issue with Sandro himself,” Howe explained, describing the 26-year-old as “very happy and committed”.

The manager acknowledged that top players naturally attract attention from rival clubs but expressed confidence in Newcastle’s improved position following sporting director Ross Wilson’s arrival. “Our best players are always going to attract glances from other clubs. That’s just the reality of football,” Howe stated, referencing the club’s ability to “navigate those waters in a much calmer, clearer way” compared to previous transfer windows.

Newcastle’s contractual position with Tonali appears secure, with the Italian having signed a new one-year extension following his return from a 10-month betting ban. The club also holds an option to trigger an additional 12-month extension to 2030, strengthening their negotiating stance should formal approaches materialise.

Tonali previously indicated his happiness at Newcastle in November while acknowledging the difficulty of long-term planning in football. His commitment to repaying the club’s faith during his suspension period resulted in the contract extension, demonstrating his appreciation for Newcastle’s support throughout a challenging personal period.
