Kelechi Iheanacho Completes Celtic Move as Free Agent After Sevilla Exit
Celtic have secured the signing of Nigerian striker Kelechi Iheanacho on a one-year deal with an option for a further year, completing the transfer just 24 hours after his Sevilla contract was mutually terminated. The signing was confirmed late Tuesday night, allowing the Scottish champions to add striking reinforcements outside the traditional transfer window as Iheanacho joined as a free agent.
The move materialized after Celtic’s failure to secure Kasper Dolberg on deadline day, prompting Brendan Rodgers to finalize negotiations for his former Leicester City striker as a late solution to the club’s attacking needs. Iheanacho’s arrival follows his challenging spell at Sevilla, where he managed just 11 appearances and three goals before a loan stint at Middlesbrough last season.
Rodgers expressed considerable enthusiasm about reuniting with the 28-year-old, highlighting Iheanacho’s talent, athleticism, and experience while stating the striker would “make a big contribution” to Celtic’s campaign. Celtic officially announced the signing pending international clearance, with the timing strategically aligned to meet Europa League registration requirements.
The Nigerian international replaces Adam Idah, who departed for Swansea City for an undisclosed fee, addressing supporter pressure for striking reinforcements following the club’s unsuccessful pursuit of other targets. Turkish club Samsunspor had also shown interest in Iheanacho, but Celtic’s swift negotiations proved decisive once Sevilla facilitated his exit by mutual consent.
Financial terms of Iheanacho’s contract remain undisclosed, while his immediate availability for upcoming fixtures depends on completing international clearance procedures. The signing represents a calculated gamble for Celtic, with reports initially suggesting a two-year offer before settling on the one-year deal with an optional extension based on performance.
