Liverpool’s injury problems continue to mount following their dramatic 2-1 defeat to Manchester City, with key players facing extended spells on the sidelines that could impact their top-four ambitions. According to Eplindex.com.
Liverpool’s injury crisis deepens as Isak faces months out and Frimpong recovery stalls
Alexander Isak remains Liverpool’s most significant absentee, with manager Arne Slot confirming the Swedish striker will be out for several more months. The forward suffered a fractured fibula after scoring in the 2-1 win at Tottenham before Christmas, requiring surgery on his ankle and leg following what Slot described as a “reckless” challenge by Micky van de Ven.
Jeremie Frimpong’s return timeline has become clearer following the City defeat, though it offers little immediate relief for Liverpool’s defensive concerns. The Dutch right-back, who was forced off during the 6-0 Champions League win over Qarabag with a muscle injury, will “definitely not train” with the squad according to Slot’s latest assessment.
The manager provided a firmer outlook on Frimpong’s availability after the Anfield clash, stating: “Jeremie for sure [will not play against Sunderland]. We knew that when he got injured, it was a few weeks.” However, Slot offered some optimism, noting the injury “is not as bad as we thought he would be out.”
Liverpool are targeting a potential return for Frimpong away to Nottingham Forest on February 21, which would restore a natural right-back option. The club’s defensive depth remains severely tested, with Joe Gomez’s hip problem leaving Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate as the only senior centre-backs available.
Conor Bradley’s situation presents the longest-term concern, with the right-back facing an extended absence following knee surgery. The club confirmed Bradley “will undergo surgery in the coming days and then begin a period of rehabilitation,” with his expected comeback sitting in summer 2026 after sustaining the injury at Arsenal.
