Manchester City’s title challenge suffered another setback as they drew 1-1 with Brighton at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday evening, extending their winless run to three consecutive games despite Erling Haaland’s 150th goal for the club as jeers were heard from home supporters at full-time.

Manchester City’s Title Hopes Fade Further After Brighton Draw Extends Winless Run

Pep Guardiola’s side have now drawn three games in a row following previous stalemates against Sunderland and Chelsea, dropping six points in a week during what the manager described as a crucial month for the club. City face 10 games across four different competitions between 1 January and 1 February, with the team struggling to cope with a mounting injury crisis that has decimated their defensive options.

The Citizens could find themselves eight points behind Arsenal if the Gunners beat Liverpool on Thursday, leaving City with 17 games remaining to salvage their title ambitions. Guardiola was forced to recall academy product Max Alleyne from his loan spell at Watford, with the 20-year-old making his first-team debut as Josko Gvardiol, Ruben Dias and John Stones all remain sidelined until at least next month.

Guardiola acknowledged his team’s struggles in front of goal despite creating numerous chances, stating that scoring goals is “part of doing your job” after City failed to convert their opportunities. “Too many clear chances and all the people up front unfortunately we could not score,” the Spanish manager said. “Expected goals doesn’t give me anything. It’s how you play for goals and we could not do that today.”

The manager insisted the current situation differs from last season’s injury crisis, emphasizing the team’s energy and approach remain positive despite the results. “The way we played, and the energy we have. The energy and the way we play we create chances and expected goals we just didn’t put the ball in the net,” Guardiola explained. City are reportedly close to signing Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth for £65 million and have stepped up efforts to acquire defender Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace.

City face Exeter in the FA Cup on Saturday, providing an opportunity to end their winless streak or risk further damage to their season if they suffer an upset against the League One side. Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville described the Brighton draw as “another punch in the ribs” for City, noting that Arsenal will be confident ahead of their crucial fixture against Liverpool.
