Jean-Philippe Mateta faces a challenging crossroads after his dream move to AC Milan collapsed due to knee injury concerns discovered during medical examinations. The Crystal Palace striker must now weigh surgery against World Cup ambitions while considering his future at Selhurst Park. According to Bbc.com.

Mateta’s Milan Dream Shattered by Medical Concerns as Surgery Looms

AC Milan withdrew from a £30m deal for Jean-Philippe Mateta after two medical examinations revealed concerns about the striker’s right knee inflammation. The Serie A club concluded that the 28-year-old would likely require surgery to resolve the issue, which cannot be addressed through therapy and load management alone.

Crystal Palace had been transparent about Mateta’s knee problems, providing Milan with full medical reports towards the end of last week. However, Milan’s concerns centered on the striker’s previous meniscus rupture in 2019 while at Mainz, which required surgery and kept him sidelined for approximately six months.

The knee issue may explain Mateta’s recent struggles, having scored just once since the start of December despite the ailment not preventing his attempts to force a move away from Selhurst Park. Palace manager Oliver Glasner has spoken publicly about the striker’s knee problems in recent weeks.

Surgery appears the logical solution, allowing Mateta to continue his career pain-free while addressing future suitors’ fitness concerns. For Palace, an operation would eliminate the knee problem as an obstacle in any future sale, particularly important given Mateta’s contract expires in 2027.

However, any surgical intervention could jeopardize Mateta’s World Cup hopes with France this summer. The striker has scored two goals in three international appearances since his debut last year, but recovery time would reduce his opportunities to impress manager Didier Deschamps, especially with new signing Jorgen Strand Larsen’s £48m arrival limiting his playing time.
