Trey Nyoni has become a regular for Liverpool this season, with nine appearances in all competitions and 373 minutes already logged as a thin midfield forces Andoni Iraola to look within. The 19-year-old academy product is widely expected to start Wednesday’s League Cup tie against Chelsea. According to Anfieldindex.com.
Thin midfield hands Trey Nyoni a Liverpool opening under Andoni Iraola
Liverpool began 2026-27 short of midfield depth and with no new signing to address it. That left Iraola to look inside the club rather than rotate the same players until they tired. Nyoni has been the main beneficiary, and his early returns suggest the decision is paying off.
The 19-year-old academy midfielder has made nine appearances in all competitions, playing 373 minutes, and has featured in 75% of Liverpool’s matches so far. Projected across the season, that rate would put him in the 1,500 to 2,000-minute range. That is a heavy load for a player who began the campaign on the fringe of the first-team group.
Ahead of Wednesday’s League Cup tie against Chelsea, which he is widely expected to start, Nyoni described his mindset plainly: “I just try to make the most out of the minutes I get”. He added that the recent run of exposure has been beneficial, calling a heavy workload in a short space of time different but “really good”.
Nyoni is not the only young player getting opportunities. Rio Ngumoha and Lewis Koumas have also been given significant action. Liverpool want to compete in four competitions, and with depth stretched across several positions, the academy is hard to overlook. Iraola has accepted that younger players must contribute, and has trusted them enough to let them settle.
Nyoni also spoke of the standard demanded internally, saying it is encouraging to see younger players involved and that the group must support one another. He noted that the world-class names around them will push the youngsters every day, and said none of the squad feel nervous when they take the pitch. Liverpool still need more from the squad overall, especially in midfield.
