Raphinha has revealed he would have left Barcelona if Hansi Flick had not replaced Xavi as manager, crediting the German coach with transforming his career at the Catalan club after struggling with self-doubt and inconsistent performances during his first two seasons following his 2022 arrival from Leeds United.
Raphinha Credits Flick’s Belief After Admitting He Nearly Left Barcelona
The Brazilian winger’s transformation under Flick has been remarkable, with his goal and assist contributions increasing dramatically since the German manager’s appointment in May 2024. Under Xavi, Raphinha made 87 appearances, scoring 20 goals and providing 23 assists across two seasons. Under Flick, he has already surpassed those totals in just 74 matches, scoring 45 goals and registering 26 assists.
Raphinha’s early Barcelona career was marked by uncertainty and rotation, making 11 substitute appearances and starting just 42 of a possible 76 matches in his first two seasons. The 29-year-old admitted to experiencing significant self-doubt during this period, stating there was a lot of internal criticism that made him consider leaving the club before Flick’s arrival changed everything.
The transformation became evident in Raphinha’s recent performances, including his two goals in Sunday’s Super Cup final victory over Real Madrid, which earned Barcelona their fourth consecutive Super Cup triumph. His goal contributions have grown steadily from 14 in his debut 2022-23 season to 15 in his second year, before almost doubling to 27 last season as his playing time increased significantly.
Flick described Raphinha’s mentality as “unbelievable” following Sunday’s final, praising the intensity and confidence he brings to the team. The manager highlighted how Raphinha responded to missing his first chance by scoring the opening goal, demonstrating the mental strength that has become characteristic of his performances under the new regime.
The Brazilian’s evolution has been noticed by Barcelona supporters, with fans crediting improved self-esteem, tactical understanding, and leadership qualities for his transformation from a frequently rotated squad player to one of the club’s most dependable performers in crucial matches. His last-minute winner in Barcelona’s 5-4 Champions League victory over Benfica last season marked a key moment in establishing his importance to the team.
