Barcelona’s back-to-back defeats to PSG and Real Madrid have put Rodri under scrutiny, but his influence away from the pitch tells a different story. The midfielder has become a leading voice in the dressing room without the captain’s armband, and helped organise a team lunch this week. According to Barcauniversal.com.
Rodri’s leadership value at Barcelona outweighs one poor El Clasico
Rodri was unable to make an impact in the Clasico, and many supporters responded by calling for Frenkie de Jong to be introduced more often. That reaction, coming after defeats to PSG and Real Madrid in quick succession, overlooks the critical part the Spanish international plays in leading an otherwise inexperienced Barcelona side.
MARCA reports that Rodri has rapidly become among the most influential figures in the Barcelona dressing room, despite not wearing the captain’s armband. That matters because Hansi Flick had publicly stressed last season that his squad needed leaders who could take responsibility in testing moments.
Raphinha carries the armband and much of that responsibility, yet Rodri’s personality and experience have quickly given him real standing within the group. The clearest example came this week, when he joined Raphinha and the other captains in organising a team lunch after the defeats to Real Madrid and PSG.
On paper, Barcelona had plenty of central midfield options last summer, yet the club acted without hesitation when the chance to sign Rodri arose. There were two reasons: he ranks among the finest midfielders anywhere, and he could bring experience, character and leadership to a young squad.
Supporters gave him a rousing ovation on his first appearance at the Joan Gamper Trophy, and he has since become an indispensable fixture in Flick’s starting eleven. Against that record, one underwhelming Clasico does little to change the picture of a significant presence on and off the pitch.
