Tottenham’s pursuit of Manchester City winger Savinho has been dealt a significant blow after Pep Guardiola confirmed the Brazilian will be sidelined for at least six weeks, possibly up to two months, following an injury sustained against Sunderland on New Year’s Day.
Savinho Injury Rules Out Tottenham Transfer Move as Spurs Seek January Reinforcements
The 21-year-old winger was on Tottenham’s radar last summer before Manchester City blocked a potential move to north London. Savinho remained appreciated by the Europa League winners and was believed to be open to a switch to N17 ahead of the current season, though the transfer never materialized.
Guardiola revealed following City’s 1-1 draw with Brighton that Savinho will be out for at least six weeks, possibly up to two months. The injury means it is now highly unlikely he will leave City this month despite the imminent £65 million signing of Antoine Semenyo, who is booked to undergo a medical at City on Thursday after scoring a stoppage-time winner against Spurs on Wednesday night.
The setback compounds Tottenham’s attacking problems after selling Brennan Johnson to Crystal Palace in a £35 million deal earlier this month. Mohammed Kudus has also picked up an adductor injury, leaving Thomas Frank’s side light on offensive options during the January transfer window.
Speaking before the Bournemouth match, Frank acknowledged his team’s need for reinforcements. “I think it’s pretty fair to say that we are maybe a little bit short on offensive options,” Frank said. “I think also it’s fair, there’s no one who’s really grabbed that shirt on the left-hand side. So I think that’s definitely up for grabs.”
Tottenham’s injury concerns extend beyond their transfer targets, with Dejan Kulusevski yet to kick a ball this season following patella tendon surgery last year. Dominic Solanke is back in training but has only featured three times this term, while Yang Min-hyeok was recalled from his Portsmouth loan spell only to be immediately sent out again to Championship leaders Coventry City.
