Silva’s Munich Equaliser Could Reset His Dortmund Path

Fabio Silva’s 89th-minute goal earned Borussia Dortmund a 2-2 draw at Bayern Munich and preserved their unbeaten record. The forward has spent much of his career searching for consistency, and with starts hard to come by, the equaliser could prove a defining moment in his time in Germany. According to Skysports.com.

Fabio Silva’s late Munich strike could reshape his standing at Dortmund

Silva needed only two touches to change the mood at the Allianz Arena. The first protected the ball and created space, and the second sent a shot into the far corner, giving Dortmund a 2-2 draw after Serhou Guirassy had scored the game’s first equaliser. Harry Kane, the Ballon d’Or winner, faltered at the other end.

The goal lands differently given Silva’s trajectory. Wolves committed £30m to sign him from Porto at 18, with the club’s chairman describing him as a generational talent, and he was nominated for the Golden Boy award. Yet 62 appearances in the Premier League yielded only four goals, with the early step up proving a struggle.

Loans at Anderlecht, PSV and Rangers produced uneven results before he showed more encouraging form at Las Palmas in LaLiga. After leaving Wolves to sign permanently for Dortmund last year, he added a seventh different European league, but a first Bundesliga season spent largely on the bench made an eighth look likely in the summer.

Uncertainty surrounded his future. After scoring against Bayern in the German Super Cup in August, he did not rule out leaving and said he wanted to start more games. On Saturday he acknowledged the transfer-window noise, but a conversation with the coach and sporting director before the market closed changed things.

Reassured about his role, he scored in his first two league games of the season, yet opportunities remain limited. His only league start in the past six weeks came against Eintracht Frankfurt, when he was substituted before Maxi Beier’s late winner. Silva, now 24, nonetheless has reasons to treat the Munich goal as a turning point.

As his physicality has developed, Silva has moved beyond the penalty-box poacher he was once seen as, and regards himself as a cross between a No 9 and a No 10. That opens up room alongside Guirassy. Last season they started only four games together, with Silva scoring three goals to Guirassy’s 22.

This season they have made three starts together, all won by Dortmund, and Guirassy stayed on the pitch with him in Munich. Silva wants to be seen as a partner rather than a back-up and admits he would rather start than sit on the bench. Yet he concluded: “I have more things to give to this club.”
