Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has issued a public apology to Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr and president Florentino Perez for his sideline antics during the Spanish Super Cup semifinal, admitting his behaviour was wrong while speaking to media ahead of their Copa del Rey clash against Deportivo la Coruna.

The controversy stems from the Spanish Super Cup semifinal between the two Madrid clubs, during which Simeone was spotted verbally taunting Vinicius from the sidelines on several occasions at the Santiago Bernabeu. The Argentine tactician made comments about the Brazilian forward being whistled and booed by fans in recent games, while also suggesting that Perez would dismiss him at the end of the season.
Simeone was heard telling the forward “Florentino is going to fire you, remember what I’m telling you” during the heated encounter. His comments sparked an angry reaction not only from Vinicius but also from Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso, while the club felt that the Atletico Madrid boss had crossed a line with his behaviour during the match.
Having reflected on the incident over several days, Simeone acknowledged his mistake in his pre-match press conference. “I would like to apologise to Mr Florentino and Mr Vinicius for the incident they witnessed. It was wrong of me to put myself in that position and I accept that it was wrong,” the manager stated when addressing the media.
However, Simeone made a distinction between apologising and seeking forgiveness for his actions. “I apologise, but I do not ask for forgiveness. I have nothing more to add,” he concluded, indicating that while he recognises his behaviour was inappropriate, he considers the matter closed with his public acknowledgement of wrongdoing.
