James Trafford has admitted his current role as Manchester City’s cup goalkeeper was not what he anticipated when returning to the club for £30m last summer. The 23-year-old’s hopes of establishing himself as number one were disrupted by Gianluigi Donnarumma’s deadline day arrival from Paris St-Germain. According to Bbc.com.
Trafford Acknowledges Unexpected Backup Role After Donnarumma Disrupts City Plans
Trafford began this season as City’s first-choice goalkeeper, featuring in the club’s opening three Premier League matches of the campaign. However, Donnarumma’s arrival completely transformed the goalkeeping hierarchy at the Etihad Stadium. City capitalised on the opportunity to secure one of world football’s elite keepers when the Italian became surplus to requirements at Paris St-Germain.
The Italian international has since made 30 appearances for City, relegating Trafford to domestic cup duties plus one Champions League outing. Following his clean sheet performance in Saturday’s FA Cup fourth-round victory over Salford City, Trafford candidly addressed his current situation. “It wasn’t what I expected coming into the season,” he told the BBC when discussing his cup goalkeeper role.
Trafford’s return to City represented unfinished business after his 2023 departure in search of regular playing time at Burnley. The goalkeeper excelled during Burnley’s promotion campaign, playing 45 games and conceding just 16 goals in the Championship. His impressive form earned him inclusion in England’s initial 33-man squad for Euro 2024, though he failed to make the final selection.
The arrival of 26-year-old Donnarumma has significantly impacted Trafford’s international prospects, with the goalkeeper absent from Three Lions squads since November. Former City keeper Nicky Weaver expressed sympathy for Trafford’s predicament, noting the difficulty of competing against a goalkeeper of Donnarumma’s calibre. “It’s the life of a goalkeeper,” Weaver observed, highlighting the challenging nature of the position’s hierarchy.
Despite acknowledging the reality of his situation, Trafford maintains a professional attitude towards his reduced role. “It’s the reality and I have to give it my best shot,” he stated, demonstrating his commitment to making the most of his current circumstances at City.
