Thomas Tuchel has committed his future to England by signing a contract extension until 2028, effectively ending speculation linking him with managerial vacancies including Manchester United. The German’s previous deal was set to expire after this summer’s World Cup. According to Skysports.com.
Tuchel commits to England through Euro 2028 in potential blow to Man Utd
The timing of Tuchel’s extension proves particularly significant given clubs potentially looking for new managers this summer, including Manchester United. The FA said the agreement would provide “clarity and full focus” on the World Cup, hoping the extension will silence talk around his future which could otherwise prove a distraction.
FA chief executive Mark Bullingham emphasised there is “simply no better candidate available in world football” when explaining the decision to secure Tuchel early. By securing the German and his team for 2028, the FA have taken away potential contract renegotiations around the tournament as a distraction.
Tuchel expressed his satisfaction with the extension, stating he has “loved every minute so far of working with my players and coaches”. The German added that Euro 2028 will be a very special tournament, describing his England role as a “dream job” following support from fans wherever he goes.
The 58-year-old’s backroom team of Anthony Barry, Henrique Hilario, Nico Mayer and James Melbourne have also agreed extensions through to the end of Euro 2028. Tuchel’s England team cruised through World Cup qualification, winning all eight matches in their group featuring Albania, Serbia, Latvia and Andorra.
England will begin their World Cup campaign on Wednesday, June 17 against Croatia, before facing Ghana and Panama in their other group matches later in June. The Three Lions will prepare with friendlies against New Zealand and Costa Rica in early June as part of a preparation camp in south Florida.
