West Bromwich Albion have dismissed Ryan Mason as head coach following Monday’s stoppage-time defeat at Leicester City that left the club 18th in the Championship table. The loss marked the team’s 10th consecutive away defeat and brought an end to Mason’s seven-month tenure at The Hawthorns.
Ryan Mason Dismissed as West Brom Head Coach After Leicester Defeat Extends Winless Away Run
Mason was appointed on a three-year contract in June after holding various roles at Tottenham, including interim manager and assistant to Ange Postecoglou. The 34-year-old’s departure was confirmed alongside coaching staff members Nigel Gibbs and Sam Pooley, who have also left the club with immediate effect.
West Brom expressed gratitude for the departing staff’s contributions in an official statement. “The club would like to place on record its thanks to Ryan, Nigel and Sam for their efforts and wishes all three the very best for the future,” the club announced. First-team coach James Morrison will oversee training and matchday operations on an interim basis until new appointments are made.
Mason’s tenure began promisingly with three victories and one draw from his opening four Championship fixtures. However, his form deteriorated significantly as he managed only six wins from his subsequent 22 matches, with four defeats in his final five games in charge. The poor run left West Brom seven points above the relegation zone and 10 points away from playoff contention.
The club face Swansea City in the FA Cup third round on Sunday before returning to Championship action against second-placed Middlesbrough at The Hawthorns the following Friday. Mason had been appointed as the permanent successor to Tony Mowbray, who was dismissed in April 2025, continuing a pattern of managerial instability at the club.
Since Tony Pulis departed West Brom in 2017, only Carlos Corberán has managed more than 100 games from the nine managers appointed during that period. The club’s current league position of 18th with 31 points from 26 matches represents a disappointing campaign for a side with promotion aspirations at the season’s outset.
