Mohamed Salah Defends Former Liverpool Teammates After Fan Account Compares Them Unfavorably to New Signings

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has taken a firm public stance against perceived disrespect toward his former teammates, responding sharply to a fan account that questioned the value of departed forwards Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz. The controversy erupted on September 3, 2025, when the Anfield Edition fan account posted a provocative comparison between the transferred players and Liverpool’s high-profile summer signings.

The fan account’s post featured black-and-white images contrasting Nunez and Diaz against new arrivals Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, accompanied by the caption “Name a bigger upgrade in footballing history.” Salah’s response was swift and pointed, stating on his verified Twitter/X account: “How about we celebrate the great signings without disrespecting the PL champions?” The Egyptian forward emphasized that Diaz and Nunez were “friends above and beyond work colleagues,” highlighting the personal nature of his defense.

The timing of Salah’s intervention carries particular weight given the circumstances surrounding both departures. Luis Diaz transferred to Bayern Munich for approximately €75 million after contributing 41 goals in 148 appearances for Liverpool, while Darwin Nunez moved to Al Hilal for around €53 million following 40 goals in 143 appearances. Both players were integral members of Liverpool’s Premier League title-winning squad last season, making the fan account’s dismissive tone particularly jarring for Salah.

Liverpool’s summer recruitment strategy involved significant investment in replacing the departed forwards, with Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz arriving for a combined fee approaching £250 million. Isak inherited Nunez’s No. 9 shirt after finishing as the Premier League’s second-highest scorer behind Salah last season, while Wirtz took Diaz’s No. 7 shirt following his recognition as 2023-24 Bundesliga Player of the Year.

The Anfield Edition account quickly issued an apology following Salah’s public rebuke, clarifying that their post was intended to highlight Liverpool’s impressive summer transfers rather than disrespect the departed players. However, the incident has sparked broader discussions about fan conduct and respect for former players who contributed to recent success. No official statements have emerged from Liverpool FC or representatives of the players involved, leaving the social media exchange as the primary record of this dispute over player legacy and respect.
