Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana has agreed to join Trabzonspor on a season-long loan deal, with the Turkish club aiming to complete formalities before their September 12 transfer deadline as Onana seeks regular playing time after falling to third-choice status at Old Trafford.

André Onana Agrees Season-Long Trabzonspor Loan as Manchester United Exit Approaches

Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana has agreed to join Trabzonspor on loan for the remainder of the 2025-26 campaign, with the transfer now in its final stages pending the player’s preparations to travel to Turkey for formalities. The Cameroon international’s departure comes after his playing time at Old Trafford has significantly diminished, with new signing Senne Lammens and Altay Bayındır occupying the first and second-choice goalkeeper positions, effectively pushing Onana down to third-choice status in Erik ten Hag’s pecking order.

The agreed deal represents a season-long loan without an option for Trabzonspor to make the transfer permanent this summer, though reports indicate a permanent move next summer remains possible if both clubs negotiate further terms. Trabzonspor are working against the clock to complete the deal, with the Turkish Süper Lig transfer window closing on September 12, 2025, and the club aiming to integrate Onana into their squad immediately after the deadline to strengthen their goalkeeping options for the upcoming campaign.

While initially reluctant to leave Manchester United due to his desire to fight for his place in the first team, Onana has now accepted the loan offer to ensure regular match play and maintain his competitive fitness. The 29-year-old’s contract with Manchester United still has three years remaining, including a 12-month extension clause, which secures the club’s strong negotiating position for any future permanent transfer discussions beyond the current loan arrangement.

Manchester United appears willing to allow Onana’s exit on loan, acknowledging his reduced role following the arrival of their preferred goalkeeper and aligning with broader squad management strategies. For Trabzonspor, acquiring an experienced international goalkeeper represents a significant coup, with the Turkish club viewing Onana as their first-choice option and planning to introduce him into their starting lineup as quickly as possible once the transfer formalities are completed.

The move remains technically pending completion, with no official club statements yet confirming the deal’s closure, though media reports suggest no significant obstacles are expected. Financial terms of the loan arrangement have not been disclosed, and Onana’s final approval along with completion of medical examinations represent the remaining steps before his temporary switch to Turkish football becomes official, with Trabzonspor confident of securing his signature before their transfer deadline expires.
