Borussia Dortmund face a critical decision on Julian Brandt’s future as the winter transfer window approaches, with the club signaling a potential €25 million summer exit to avoid losing him for free in 2026.
Dortmund Must Decide on Julian Brandt Future as Winter Window Approaches
Borussia Dortmund find themselves at a crossroads regarding Julian Brandt’s future, with club officials signaling weeks ago that a departure in summer 2025 might be preferable as his contract enters its final year. The German international’s inconsistent performances this season have intensified scrutiny, dropping from 26 goal contributions in 2023/24 to just 16 this campaign, creating uncertainty around his role in Dortmund’s future plans.
Managing director for sport Lars Ricken confirmed the club’s position remains fluid, stating that Brandt’s contract situation is being monitored and a potential extension remains possible if performances improve significantly. However, Dortmund are reportedly considering selling the 28-year-old for approximately €25 million (£21m) this summer, matching the fee they paid Bayer Leverkusen in 2019 to avoid losing him on a free transfer when his contract expires in 2026.
The midfielder himself has described contract negotiations as “super relaxed” but revealed no concrete developments, suggesting discussions remain ongoing without resolution. Despite recording three goals and one assist in 35 appearances this season, including wearing the captain’s armband during FIFA Club World Cup matches, Brandt has failed to cement his position as Dortmund plan a significant squad overhaul, particularly in midfield.
Sporting director Sebastian Kehl faces a complex decision as the club weighs retaining an experienced player against investing in younger talent like target Rayan Cherki. Dortmund’s dilemma is complicated by the lack of a clear backup plan for the number 10 position, adding tactical considerations to the financial calculations surrounding Brandt’s future.
The approaching winter transfer window creates additional urgency for Dortmund’s decision-makers, though final determinations may depend on Brandt’s performances in the remaining season period. While previous interest from clubs like Arsenal has been reported, no concrete competing offers have emerged, leaving both player and club in a holding pattern as negotiations continue behind closed doors with the 2026 contract expiration looming large.
