Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has declared he will not resign despite mounting pressure from poor results, but acknowledges the board may decide his fate if performances don’t improve.

Ruben Amorim Refuses to Walk Away from United Despite Mounting Pressure and Poor Results

Ruben Amorim has categorically ruled out resigning from his Manchester United position despite the club’s alarming slide to 14th in the Premier League, telling reporters that any decision on his future rests with the board. Speaking before United’s match against Sunderland, Amorim stated: “No, that is a decision of the board. I cannot do that (resign)… I want to continue here and I want to fight for this.”

The Portuguese manager’s defiant stance comes amid United’s worst start to a Premier League season in recent memory, with just seven points from six matches including three defeats, two draws, and only one victory. The pressure intensified following a humiliating 3-1 defeat to Brentford and an early League Cup exit to fourth-tier Grimsby Town, results that have left the club struggling near the relegation zone rather than competing for European qualification.

Amorim openly acknowledged the precarious nature of his position at Old Trafford, admitting the financial and commercial pressures that come with managing one of football’s biggest institutions. “We understand that we need results to continue the project… this is a very big club with a lot of sponsors… the balance is really hard,” he explained, demonstrating his awareness that poor performances could ultimately cost him his job despite his contract running until 2027.

The manager’s tactical decisions have drawn sharp criticism from former United defender Gary Neville, who expressed serious concerns about team selections and substitutions. Neville stated he was “very worried” about Amorim’s tenure, particularly criticizing the decision to deploy Mason Mount as a left wing-back, highlighting the growing scrutiny over the manager’s approach.

With United unable to string together consecutive league victories since May 2024, Amorim’s immediate future hinges on a rapid improvement in results. While the 39-year-old remains determined to turn around the club’s fortunes, the absence of any public backing from the Manchester United board leaves his position vulnerable to further deterioration in performances, making the coming fixtures crucial for his survival at Old Trafford.
