Burnley midfielder Hannibal Mejbri has been handed a four-match suspension and fined £15,000 by the Football Association after admitting to spitting at Leeds United supporters during the Clarets’ 2-0 victory at Turf Moor on 18 October, ruling him out until 30 December.
Mejbri Receives Four-Match Ban and £15,000 Fine for Spitting Incident
The 22-year-old Tunisia international was charged with misconduct following the incident that occurred in the 67th minute of Burnley’s Championship victory over Leeds United.
The FA confirmed Mejbri admitted to acting improperly by spitting at or in the direction of visiting supporters in the away section, prompting Lancashire Police to investigate after a formal complaint was lodged.
An FA regulatory commission imposed the punishment following a hearing, with the governing body stating that Mejbri breached the laws of the game through abusive and indecent behaviour.
The former Manchester United academy graduate will miss crucial fixtures against Newcastle United, Fulham, Bournemouth and Everton as Burnley battle relegation from the Premier League.
The suspension represents a significant blow for manager Vincent Kompany’s side, who currently occupy 19th position in the Premier League table after suffering five consecutive defeats.
Mejbri has established himself as a key player since his £9.4 million transfer from Old Trafford in August 2024, making 50 appearances across all competitions and contributing one goal during his time at Turf Moor.
The incident highlights the ongoing challenges facing newly-promoted Burnley as they struggle to adapt to top-flight football following their Championship title triumph last season.
Mejbri’s earliest possible return date is set for the home fixture against Newcastle United on 30 December, provided the club can navigate their upcoming fixtures without further disciplinary issues.
Kompany will need to restructure his midfield options during Mejbri’s absence as Burnley attempt to climb away from the relegation zone.
The Clarets face a challenging December schedule that could prove decisive in determining their Premier League survival, with the Tunisian’s suspension adding to their mounting difficulties in what has become a disappointing campaign thus far.
