Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is prepared to pursue a loan move away from Old Trafford in January after becoming deeply frustrated with his lack of playing time under manager Ruben Amorim, despite being a regular starter for England at international level.
Frustrated Mainoo Ready to Seek January Loan Exit From Manchester United
The 19-year-old England international has not started a single Premier League match this season under Amorim, with his only start across all competitions coming in United’s League Cup penalty defeat to Grimsby Town earlier this campaign.
Mainoo has been restricted to nine substitute appearances in the league, despite previously establishing himself as a key player for both club and country.
Amorim publicly announced that Mainoo would be competing directly with captain Bruno Fernandes for a starting position this season, prompting the midfielder to consider his options before the summer transfer deadline.
Director of football Jason Wilcox successfully persuaded Mainoo to remain and fight for his place, but the situation has not improved under the Portuguese manager’s tactical system.
The midfielder was an unused substitute during United’s 1-1 draw against West Ham on Thursday evening, further highlighting his peripheral role in Amorim’s plans.
Reports suggest Mainoo has been linked with a potential loan move to Serie A side Napoli, as he seeks regular first-team football to maintain his development and international prospects with England.
United are expected to delay any decision on Mainoo’s future until after the Africa Cup of Nations concludes in mid-January, given the potential absence of key players including Cameroon’s Bryan Mbeumo and Ivory Coast international Amad Diallo.
The club’s stance may soften if squad depth becomes an issue during the tournament period.
When questioned about Mainoo’s situation following the West Ham match, Amorim defended his selection policy, stating he simply picks the best players for each fixture regardless of reputation.
The manager acknowledged understanding the frustration surrounding Mainoo’s lack of opportunities but insisted his decisions are based purely on what he believes gives United the best chance of winning matches.
