Tonda Eckert has been appointed Southampton’s permanent head coach on a contract until 2027 after transforming the Championship club’s fortunes since taking interim charge in November, with the 32-year-old German targeting promotion back to the Premier League.
Eckert Appointed Southampton Manager Permanently After Impressive Interim Spell
Southampton confirmed Eckert’s permanent appointment on Thursday following a remarkable turnaround that has seen the Saints climb from 21st position to 14th in the Championship table.
The former under-21s coach has overseen four victories in five matches since replacing Will Still, who was dismissed after just five months in charge at St Mary’s Stadium.
Eckert’s impressive start included consecutive victories against Queens Park Rangers, Sheffield Wednesday, Charlton Athletic and Leicester City before suffering a narrow 3-2 defeat at Millwall last Saturday.
The German’s tactical approach and man-management skills have revitalised a squad that appeared destined for a relegation battle following their poor start to the campaign after dropping from the Premier League.
The 32-year-old has never previously managed a first-team but brings valuable experience as assistant manager at Barnsley and Italian side Genoa.
Technical director Johannes Spors praised Eckert’s empathy with the playing group and clarity of communication, highlighting how he has united players and supporters during his brief tenure in charge of team affairs.
Southampton now sit just five points adrift of the Championship play-off places and Eckert has boldly declared his promotion ambitions for the remainder of the season.
The Saints’ remarkable recovery under his guidance has transformed expectations at the club, with supporters now daring to dream of an immediate return to England’s top flight.
Eckert stated his determination to pursue every available point in Southampton’s promotion push, emphasising his ambitious approach and refusal to settle for mid-table mediocrity.
The German will look to maintain momentum when Southampton return to action, with the club’s hierarchy backing his vision for restoring Premier League football to St Mary’s Stadium.
